Profile
For his senior design project at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Smith worked with a small team to design, construct and launch a laboratory in which graduate students could study lasers. After graduation, he spent three years at Washington University Medical School researching neuroanatomy, examining the actions of the cerebellum and the parvocellular red nucleus during non-human primate gaze-reach calibration.
Through his position as an associate at the Institute for Information Law and Policy at New York Law School, Smith worked with the Public Index in an initiative to promote intelligent discussion about the potential impact of the complex and controversial Google Books copyright infringement case, presenting the group’s findings at the Innovate/Activate “unconference” in September 2010.
Smith has programmed software in languages as varied as C, Excel VBA, LabView, Spike2, MatLab, XNA, HTML, Flash, and Objective-C, and has developed and released two patent-related apps on Apple’s app store: Dial-a-Patent and MPEP Plus.
Smith has volunteered with the Innocence Project and aided the New York City Department of Education in developing cyberbullying policies. In addition, he has tutored students in math at 826NYC, a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting children ages 6-18 in developing writing skills.
